The name “Wolkenberg”

The history of the small village began around 1500. Historical records over the centuries also make mention of Wulkenberg and Wolckenbergk. Before being renamed to Wolkenberg, the village was known as Kleschnik, the Sorbian name. Around 1700, prominent personalities resided in Wolkenberg, among them, the Countess von Pückler and her children. In the early 90s, the town was cleared to make way for coal from the Welzow-Süd mine. Around 150 residents were relocated to neighbouring communities, mainly Spremberg.
